The Most Wonderful Books Writers On Discovering The...

â€Å"Superman and Me† by Sherman Alexie first appeared in â€Å"The Most Wonderful Books: Writers on Discovering the pleasures of Reading.† Sherman Alexie is a well-known Native American writer that publishes short stories, novels, and poetry. Out of the three narratives, I found myself connect with this story more than the others. Alexie tells us about his childhood as an Indian boy that grew up on the Reservation. His father was a big reader so as a kid he’s always had an interest in books and eventually it became a passion. As he advanced in reading at an early age, peers would have difficulty with the content that he’s already achieved. Other kids would frown upon him because it was out of the ordinary for an Indian to be smart. Children on the Reservation were expected to be unsuccessful, but Alexie refused to let himself fail. Throughout his obstacles in life, he ended up becoming a writer and now, visits the Reservation to make sure children get as much education as possible. Reading saved his life and he believed it could save theirs as well. Sherman Alexie uses multiple techniques throughout his narrative to inform the audience about how he saved his life through literacy by tieing in his personal perspectives. Alexie uses selective word choice in order for us to get a sense about his childhood. Current studies show that in the next 10 – 15 years such groups will rise to 90% in the work force. Today’s leaders are now confronted with the challenges of how to effectively manage the work force that is increasing in the diverse lines of ethnicity, physical ability, race, gender and sexual preferences and age. Parents as the first and foremost teachers It is often said that parents are the first teacher of a child. As a priority, parents should be the first teacher in helping a child to become hard workers, kind, respectful, responsible and also helping them get away from social illnesses in our society. In order for a child to become hard workers, loving and supportive, parents must involve children of both genders in any home activities. If parents going out for nightclub; as a start to help keeping the child away from social illnesses, parents must keep children at home under the supervision of an adult. Parents must provide their children with their necessary needs so as to help them become responsible, respectful or kind. Therefore, parents must take full responsibilities for helping a child to become well discipline, productive and someone who is with positive attitudes. First of all, parents are the primary teachers of moral values and attitudes. But in order for a child to have these characters, help the child to become hard workers, loving and supportive; therefore, parents must involve children of both genders in any home activities. In a speech when the 34th anniversary of Belize was celebrated at the park in Punta Gorda, Mr. Mohon said: What parents teach their children by precept and example about moral and religious values helps them make wise choices, even in the face of biological urges or peer influences that would have them do otherwise. One of my ideas for teaching children on these values: providing simple tasks to children at an early age. Begin by having your child put away his/her own toys. Help your child at first so the task is not overwhelming. When I was a boy, Dad starts taking me to his farm when I was just six years old. At first I did not like it because of the sun heat that normally shines on my soft skin. Every time he goes to plantation I wanted to stay. But one evening he told me that when I grow old I might end up marrying a hard working farmer’s princess, meaning I must be prepared for any farm works. At home I help Mom wash dishes, sweep, or grind corn. I owe my parents a big THANK YOU because now I don’t really depend on my wife to do all the house chores. According to the Bible in Proverb 22:6, it gives us a hint why we must love and support children. One way I suggest you to do that is simply by letting the child to help you with chores; a boy can help Mom and a girl can help Dad. You may be surprised at the fun children find in daily chores that you have long since tired of. Encourage and praise your child when he/she completes a task. Leave room for failure. If your child fails to complete a chore or doesnt do a perfect job, dont berate or embarrass that child. Children are to be kept at home when parents going out for nightclub. Why? As I know, at any nightclub there must be someone drinking liquor, smoking or romancing. And I had a friend of mine who had a family of six. Every Saturday my friend and his whole family would go to the nightclub. One day the whole family decided to go bathe in the river, except for the oldest son who was eight years old. When the family came back home, they found out that Jorge is dead, lying on the floor with an empty red-top bottle in his hand. Whatever the child sees at the club, he/she might want to try it at home or anywhere he/she meets a friend. Children drinking alcohol at an early age can damage their internal organs leading them to stunted growth. Also, if they are addicted to it, one day they might get out of control and commit suicide or force someone to have sex with. There is so much I can do but as whole we must take this into consideration and make the environment a safer home for kids  to live. So it is really helpful when children are to be kept home under the supervision of an adult when parent going out for nightclub. In that case there is great possibility for the parent to have a child grown up with good attitudes rather than just being a drunkard in the society. Remember, when a baby comes into this world, the baby does not know about the new environment. Obviously, first persons that he communicates are his parents. Parents play prominent role in his/her life. It is true that they are the best teachers, but also someone who have to provide them with their basic needs such as: food, clothes, shelter, care, love, medications and education on prime time for the brain to acquire language skills. Without these needs, I strongly believe that children tend to go out begging and even burglarizing in villages or town. When they are fully grown, most of the time they take it as a habit but if caught they can be a dead man. Instead of enjoying time life at home with family they will end up living in jail for years also. These things can be done by your children if you don’t provide children with what they need. Finally, I would  like to say that parents of today must help their children at an early age to become prepared for the life of a righteous man. Parents at home must work hard for their children. If you want a child not to have bad attitudes, parents must be a role model of love and righteousness. Providing children with their basic needs helps to keep a child from being just a troublemaker. Love your children with your whole heart. I urge you all parents to teach your kids how to love, to be responsible, respectful and to be kind with others. In conclusion, I would like to say that we should all tell society that parents are the children’s first and foremost teachers and it’s their duty to provide a child with what they need and t o make a child successful in life. Experiences are good lesson to children. So I believe it’s out duty to look after them in their old age.

Invisible Man Essays (2048 words) - Invisible Man, Narration

Invisible man "Who the hell am I?" (Ellison 386) This question puzzled the invisible man, the unidentified, anonymous narrator of Ralph Ellison's acclaimed novel Invisible Man. Throughout the story, the narrator embarks on a mental and physical journey to seek what the narrator believes is "true identity," a belief quite mistaken, for he, although unaware of it, had already been inhabiting true identities all along. The narrator's life is filled with constant eruptions of mental traumas. The biggest psychological burden he has is his identity, or rather his misidentity. He feels "wearing on the nerves" (Ellison 3) for people to see him as what they like to believe he is and not see him as what he really is. Throughout his life, he takes on several different identities and none, he thinks, adequately represents his true self, until his final one, as an invisible man. The narrator thinks the many identities he possesses does not reflect himself, but he fails to recognize that identity is simply a mirror that reflects the surrounding and the person who looks into it. It is only in this reflection of the immediate surrounding can the viewers relate the narrator's identity to. The viewers see only the part of the narrator that is apparently connected to the viewer's own world. The part obscured is unknown and therefore insignificant. Lucius Brockway, an old operator of the paint factory, saw the narrator only as an existence threatening his job, despite that the narrator is sent there to merely assist him. Brockway repeatedly question the narrator of his purpose there and his mechanical credentials but never even bother to inquire his name. Because to the old fellow, who the narrator is as a person is uninterested. What he is as an object, and what that object's relationship is to Lucius Brockway's engine room is important. The narrator's identity is derived from this relationship, and this relationship suggests to Brockway that his identity is a "threat". However the viewer decides to see someone is the identity they assign to that person. The Closing of The American Mind, by Allan Bloom, explains this identity phenomenon by comparing two "ships of states" (Bloom 113). If one ship "is to be forever at sea, [and] ?K another is to reach port and the passengers go their separate ways, they think about one another and their relationships on the ship very differently in the two cases" (Bloom 113). In the first state, friends will be acquainted and enemies will be formed, while in the second state, the passengers will most likely not bother to know anyone new, and everyone will get off the ship and remain strangers to one another. A person's identity is unalike to every different viewer at every different location and situation. This point the narrator senses but does not fully understand. During his first Brotherhood meeting, he exclaimed, "I am a new citizen of the country of your vision, a native of your fraternal land!" (Ellison 328) He preaches to others the fact that identity is transitional yet he does not accept it himself. Maybe he thought it distressing being liked not for being his true self but because of the identity he puts on or being hated not for being himself but because of his identity. To Dr. Bledsoe, the principal of the black southern university where the narrator attended, the narrator is a petty "black educated fool" (Ellison 141). To Mr. Norton, a rich white trustee of the black university, the narrator is a simple object intertwined with his fate, a mere somebody, he explained to the narrator, that "were somehow connected with [his (Mr. Norton's)] destiny" (Ellison 41). To the organizers of the Brotherhood, Jack, Tobitt, and the others, the narrator is what they designed him to be. They designed for him an identity of a social speaker and leader, and to his listeners and followers, he is just that. Those were his multiple identities and none were less authentic than the others because to his onlookers, he is what his identities say he is, even if he thinks differently. The narrator always had a desire for people "who could give [him] a proper reflection of [his] importance" (Ellison 160). But there is no such thing as a proper reflection because his importance varies among different people. Subconsciously, he craves attention. He wants recognition and status, and wants to be honored as someone special. He must feel that he "can have no dignity if his status is not special, if he is not essentially different"(Bloom 193), therefore
